We've just come from the Motorola stand. They had a really interesting selection of phones, probably the best for a while. The real killer is the Z8, which is basically what they're calling a zip slider phone. It's hard to describe, so check out the video on Tech Digest later. But what it does is the mechanism curves, so it kind of matches the contour of your face. The phone has got fantastic screen, it's basic QVGA and it will play video at 30 frames a sec; the demo we saw of the media player was really excellent. It's HSDPA, so up to 3.6 megabits per second download speed. They're also doing a deal with it in the UK with Sky, so it has some Sky applications built in. Pretty impressive phone actually. The other big one they had was the Q, the Moto Q Series, which is basically their smart phone. It's kind of like a BlackBerry style killer with a big keyboard. It runs Windows Mobile, has all the usual Windows Mobile paraphernalia. It's just a nicely designed phone also runs with DPA. They are bringing it to Europe fairly soon. I think, you know, both phones will do really well. Mororola have been a little quiet recently - I think this is a sign that they are back on the case a little bit.

Hi, this is Ashley, at 3GSM in Barcelona. It's a very very frantic start to the day. Just been over to Samsung and checked out what they're doing in WiMAX. Some very interesting stuff. The most interesting thing was something called the SPHP 9000, which is one of their UMPCs. It basically sort of morphs from being a kinda tiny laptop to sort of a screen with a big keyboard. It's so interesting. The WiMAX stuff they had! They also had the sort of WiMAX USB Dongle as well and a WiMAX enabled phone, and they're talking about mobile WiMAX happening in Europe this year. Talking about uploads and downloads, these are very impressive. The big thing is the upload speeds are so much faster than HSDPA, so for example you know it can be as much as 2 to 3 megabits a sec upload, so great for obviously picking the YouTube videos up. It was a pretty impressive demonstration; have to wait and see which operators actually choose to go with it. At the moment though it just looks like an interesting technology. They've also got plenty of partners with it. Nokia are very keen on it but so far I think it's pretty impressive. We're off to go and check out Nokia and Sony Ericsson now so see ya later.

Hi, this is Ashley. We just landed in Barcelona; I'm here for 3GSM. It's the world biggest, best and sometimes quite controversial mobile phone exhibition. There are many, many big names here, from Sony Ericsson and Nokia to content companies and many other people who are looking at taking Web 2.0 applications and importing them into mobile phones.
Throughout the duration of the show we will be using SpinVox's very clever technology, Spin-my-Blog. It enables users to post direct to their blog just by speaking to a mobile phone. So anyway, we're off to the hotel now. It's Sunday night and we're looking forward to the show starting tomorrow. I'll be spending a lot of my time with Samsung, who are paying for the trip. So expect some videos and some hands on with new phones.
